Who are we?
We are 16 ACS-CAN Volunteers and dedicated residents of Miami's Congressional District 27. We are passionate about ending the suffering and death caused by cancer. If we are to end the suffering caused by cancer, it will not just happen at the doctor's office or in research labs. It requires grassroots efforts to make movement in numbers. We come together through ACS-CAN as a tight knit group of people who aim to influence change through advocacy, awareness and community engagement.
Why cancer care?
Cancer is due to abnormal changes in our own cells, which cause them to eat away at our body. If these cells are caught early enough and treated, then the disease is cured with only minor surgeries and medications. Unfortunately, there are tens of thousands of low income and underserved Floridians who lack access to potentially life saving tests and treatments. It requires significant legislation to help this underserved population. Our efforts reach across the cancer care continuum, addressing issues in palliative care, access to colorectal screenings, cervical and breast cancer early detection efforts, closing the Medicare loophole and more.
What are our 2018 Initiatives?
Biomedical Research: It is vital that Florida supports measures that will increase the state's capacity for research and treatment as well as those measures that generate an investment in the states research infrastructure. For 2018, we ask that both the James and Esther King Biomedical Research Program and the Bankhead-Coley Cancer Research Program are funded at $15 million each and that program funded allocations are determined on a peer-reviewed, competitive grant basis.
Breast and Cervical Cancer Screenings: The Mary Brogan Breast & Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program is a state and federally funded program that anually provides more than 14,000 low-income, medically underserved Florida women between the ages of 50 and 64 access to cancer screeing and diagnostic testing services. More than 300 of these women screened will be diagnosed with cancer and provided a pathway to lifesaving treatment services through Florida Medicaid. For 2018, ACS CAN requests that the state fund the program at a level equal to approximately one-half of the U.S. CDC's current program investment in Florida or 2.6 Million.
Tobacco Prevention and Education: ACS CAN supports the continued, full implementation of Article X, Section 27 of the Florida Constitution. Funding allocated for the Tobacco Prevention and Education program should be approximately $69.94 million for the Fiscal Year 2018-19 and should be allocated based on the U.S CDC's Best Practices.
